Rice at Luton: 97 minutes to ruin a perfectly good evening
We turned a lead into a crisis, then Rice headed in at 90+7. Us Gooners call this entertainment. Our neighbours have a different word for it.

Declan Rice's winner at Luton on 5 December 2023 is a magnificent goal attached to a match that should have come with an apology. Us Gooners got three points. A quiet Tuesday was apparently an unreasonable additional demand.
Here's our position: you can love a late winner and still think the preceding chaos was ridiculous. We're gooning over Rice's header, not applying for another ninety minutes of the same treatment.
A lead? How terribly conventional.
The Premier League's report confirms the damage: Luton 3, Arsenal 4. We led at half-time, fell behind after the break and needed Havertz to bring us level before Rice won it in stoppage time.
Lovely efficient use of an evening. Take a winning position, put it through the shredder, then ask the supporters to applaud the repair work.
And we did applaud. Obviously. We're Gooners. This club could sell us a chair with three legs and we'd spend the journey home discussing its impressive ceiling.
Luton deserve credit for making it horrible. They weren't there to provide a charming little backdrop to our title ambitions. They wanted the points. Very inconvenient of them to participate in their own home fixture.
Ødegaard crosses. Rice arrives. There goes the tea.
The decisive bit is beautifully simple. Ødegaard delivers and Rice meets it with a header. The official match commentary puts the goal at 90+7, into the bottom-right corner.
Seven added minutes. Plenty of time to accept a draw, reject it, blame yourself for accepting it and decide that standing nearer the television might improve our crossing.
Then the ball goes in.
That's a proper gooning goal. Forget the carefully worded post about keeping perspective. Perspective is on the floor next to whatever you knocked off the coffee table.
The header itself rewards another look once your breathing returns. He still has to meet the delivery and place it. The clock doesn't do that for him. Wanting a winner very intensely is, as generations of Gooners can confirm, not an attacking system.
We can enjoy it and complain
There is no obligation to pretend 4–3 was a sensible way to win that match. The goon squad can celebrate Rice and remain annoyed that we needed rescuing. Football supporters are capable of holding two thoughts, provided neither involves forgiving a referee.
That's what makes this one stick. The joy isn't tidy. It arrives with all the frustration still attached, then gives you somewhere to put it. Straight into a noise no adult should make on a weeknight.
Rewatch the header, fellow Gooners. Then spare a thought for everyone who lives through the wall from us and doesn't even like football.
They held on for ninety-six minutes. Nearly got a result.
